When a tornado touchdown in Cleveland Georgia on March 20, 1998 the Mehl family lost all their personal belongings that were in a storage facility that was completely destroyed.
Ronald Mehl and “inventor and problem solver”, decided that it would not happen to them again and proceeded to design an above ground storm shelter refer today as the original rock shelter.
Over the years, the concept of a simple “storm shelter” grew to include “Storm Proof Mini Homes, and Shelters” with all the features you might enjoy in a standard home.
The Original Rock Shelter was built with a wood frame and covered with concrete. It was 12 feet in diameter and only used for storage and safety.
In contrast, today’s Storm Proof Mini Home has a steel frame covered in reinforced concrete.
Sizes are available from 22' (400 ft.²) to 32' (1000ft.²) of open living space.
